The castle was originally built during the 13th Century to be a residence for the Nobles and later for the Electorates in Heidelberg. At present, the Heidelberg Castle, with its traces of the Renaissance era, is one of the most important cultural monuments in Germany. The foreground of the Palatinate architecture was building the famous palace garden “Hortus Palatinus” at the outset of the 17th century.

Destruction of the castle was brought about by two wars (Thirty Years War and the Palatinate War of Succession) as well as a natural calamity. In 1764, it was hit by a lightning twice. With these lots of damages to the castle, the electorates lost their interest to the castle and relocated their residence to Mannheim.
